These succulents are especially suited to outdoor pots, planters or free-draining rock gardens. They produce small rosettes around the parent plant, forming dense groups. Some varieties have fine hairs or filaments that add texture.

General Sempervivum care

  • Light and location: choose a bright, airy outdoor spot with full or partial sun. In intense heat, some protection during the hottest hours can help.
  • Watering: water when the compost is dry, taking rainfall into account. Avoid standing water in the pot and water less in cold periods.
  • Compost: drainage is essential. Use a mineral, free-draining mix; in the garden, avoid waterlogged soil.
  • Winter: many Sempervivum tolerate cold well, but excessive moisture can harm their roots. Maintain good drainage during rainy months.
  • Flowering and propagation: the rosette that flowers completes its life cycle, while its daughter rosettes keep growing. Remove the dried rosette and separate developed offsets to make new plants.
