Pachyveria: fleshy rosettes with a delicate finish

Pachyveria are hybrids of Pachyphytum and Echeveria. They combine thick leaves and rosette forms in varied proportions and colours that make each cultivar distinctive. Many have abundant farina, giving the leaves a velvety or whitish appearance.

Light affects the shape and colour of these succulents. In a suitable spot, rosettes stay more compact; with too little light, they may stretch and lose definition. They are attractive in small pots or arrangements with plants that have similar needs.

General Pachyveria care

  • Light: choose a very bright spot and introduce direct sun gradually. Protect from the strongest sun during extreme heat or while the plant is not yet acclimatised.
  • Watering: water when the compost has dried, letting water drain out through the holes. Avoid standing water and adjust the frequency to temperature, airflow and growth.
  • Compost: an airy, free-draining mix with mineral materials prevents the roots from staying wet too long.
  • Temperature: shelter from frost and prolonged rain. Indoors, keep near a bright window with good airflow.
  • Maintenance: avoid rubbing or spraying the leaves to preserve their farina. Remove dry leaves carefully and check the base of the rosette and leaf joints.
