Aeonium: striking rosettes and colours that change with the seasons

Aeonium stand out for rosettes of leaves arranged around a centre, forming patterns that resemble small spirals. Their foliage may be bright green, reddish or very dark, with differences between species and cultivars.

Some remain low-growing; others develop branching stems with rosettes at their tips. They suit pots and arrangements where the plant's shape takes centre stage. Light, temperature and the season influence the appearance of the rosettes and the intensity of their colours.

General Aeonium care

  • Light: choose a bright spot with partial sun, or full sun after gradual acclimatisation. Protect more sensitive varieties from intense sun during the hottest hours.
  • Watering and dormancy: water when the compost is dry, adjusting the frequency to the plant's growth. Many Aeonium slow down during summer heat; reduce watering then and avoid keeping the roots wet.
  • Compost and pot: use a free-draining mix and a pot with drainage holes, without standing water.
  • Cold: shelter them from frost and prolonged rain while maintaining good light and airflow.
  • Maintenance: carefully remove dry leaves. Branching varieties can be propagated from stem cuttings with a rosette; let the cut heal before planting.
