Pachyphytum: plump leaves and soft colours

Pachyphytum stand out for their thick, rounded leaves, giving the rosettes a full yet delicate appearance. From soft greens and blue-greys to pink shades, their look varies with the species, light and season. Many varieties have farina, a waxy coating that gives the leaves a matt finish.

They make an interesting choice for individual pots where their plump foliage can be appreciated up close. If you like these shapes, explore Pachyveria too, hybrids that combine traits of Pachyphytum and Echeveria.

General Pachyphytum care

  • Light: they prefer plenty of light and sun, with gradual acclimatisation to direct exposure. During hot periods, watch the leaves and protect the plant from the strongest midday sun if needed.
  • Watering: let the compost dry between waterings. Water the compost and allow excess to drain away, avoiding standing water in the pot. Water less in cold weather or when growth is slow.
  • Compost: use a succulent mix with a good mineral component and a pot with drainage holes.
  • Temperature: protect from frost and persistent winter rain. A bright, sheltered spot helps keep the roots healthy.
  • Maintenance: handle carefully: leaves may detach, and touching the farina leaves marks. Remove only dry leaves and check regularly for mealybugs.
