Lithops: small living stones with distinctive patterns

Lithops are compact succulents made of paired fleshy leaves whose markings, dots and colours resemble small stones. A daisy-like flower may emerge from the fissure. Their patterns and discreet growth make them appealing to collectors.

A new leaf pair develops using reserves from the old one. This change should guide watering. Pleiospilos also look stone-like but are a different genus with their own growth rhythm. Explore Pleiospilos.

General care

  • Light: Plenty of light with gradual direct-sun acclimatisation; protect from extreme heat and ensure airflow.
  • Watering: Avoid a fixed schedule. During leaf replacement, do not water regularly while the new pair absorbs the old; resume cautiously after the old leaves dry.
  • Compost: Mostly mineral, very free-draining mix in a pot with drainage holes and depth for the roots.
  • Temperature: Protect from frost, rain and persistent dampness; extreme heat may slow growth.
  • Maintenance: Let old leaves dry naturally and avoid planting with species that need frequent watering.
