Agave: sculptural rosettes for bright spaces

Agave form rosettes of firm, fleshy leaves, often ending in sharp points and edged with spines. Their symmetry and green, blue or variegated tones give them a striking presence in pots, on patios and in gardens.

Size varies greatly: some species are compact, while others need plenty of room when mature. Before choosing, consider their eventual size and position, especially for varieties with prominent spines.

General Agave care

  • Light: choose a spot in full sun, introducing the plant to direct exposure gradually. Newly arrived plants may need temporary protection from the strongest sun.
  • Watering: let the compost dry between waterings and avoid standing water in the pot. Water less when the plant is barely growing or temperatures are low.
  • Compost: drainage is essential. Use a mix with mineral components and, in the garden, avoid areas where water collects.
  • Cold: hardiness depends on the species and growing conditions. Protect sensitive varieties from frost and excess moisture in winter.
  • Handling: wear gloves and leave space around the spiny leaves. Many species produce offsets that can be separated once well developed.
