Echeveria agavoides ‘Maria’: Rose Maria
Echeveria Maria is a strikingly beautiful succulent that stands out for its compact and robust rosette, reminiscent of a small rose. This variety is particularly appreciated for its large, compact, slightly monstrous/variegated leaves with margins and tips that turn an intense cherry red under the right sun exposure.
Features:
- Leaves: Fleshy, triangular and pointed, with a slightly stiffer texture than other Echeverias. Arranged in dense, symmetrical rosettes.
- Color: Apple-green to light green in the center, with the edges and tips developing an intense red hue, which can vary from cherry to a deep ruby, especially in conditions of strong sunlight and colder temperatures.
- Size: Medium to large rosettes, usually reaching between 15 and 20 cm in diameter, making it a plant with a notable presence.
- Growth: Slow to moderate, maintaining its compact, sculptural shape. Can produce offsets (seedlings) at the base, forming small clusters over time.
- Flowering: Produces erect flower stalks with small bell-shaped flowers, usually in shades of yellow, orange or red, which emerge above the rosette, providing a pleasant contrast.
Care:
- Light: In order for Echeveria agavoides ‘Maria’ to display its most vibrant color on the margins, it needs direct, intense sunlight for several hours a day. In places with little light, the red color may fade and the leaves may become paler and the rosette more elongated.
- Watering: Water moderately, allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. It is vital to avoid excess water and stagnant moisture, as these are the main causes of rot in succulents. In winter, significantly reduce the frequency of watering.
- Substrate: Use a specific substrate for succulents and cacti, with excellent drainage. A mixture of coarse sand, perlite or pumice is essential to ensure that the roots don’t get waterlogged.
- Temperature: It adapts well to mild temperatures (15-28°C). Protect it from strong frosts in winter, as it is not tolerant of prolonged low temperatures.
- Ventilation: Good air circulation is important for the health of the plant and to avoid fungal diseases.
Where to grow:
- Vases: Perfect for decorative vases, where its sculptural shape and the beauty of its red edges can be appreciated.
- Rock gardens: In mild climates with good drainage, ‘Maria’ fits perfectly into rock gardens, standing out for its robustness.
- Succulent arrangements: Adds a distinctive shape and color to any mixed arrangement, contrasting well with other textures and tones.
- Interiors: Ideal for window sills, desks or shelves that receive a lot of direct or very bright sunlight.
