Conophytum minimum Wittebergense is a fascinating succulent for collectors and rare plant enthusiasts. Originally from the Witteberg region of South Africa, this plant belongs to the group of “Lithops” or “stone plants” and stands out for its almost invisible shape, mimicking the rocks and soil of its natural habitat. Each “body” of the Conophytum is a fusion of two leaves, forming a small sphere or cone, with patterns and colors that vary to blend in perfectly with the environment.

Features:

• Bodies (Leaves): Small, usually a few millimeters to just over a centimeter in diameter, forming a lobed structure that resembles a small stone or two fused lobes. Their coloration varies between shades of greyish green, purple, brown and red, with patterns and spots that contribute to their camouflage. The epidermis can be smooth or slightly rough.
• Form: Grows in dense clusters, forming small “cushions” that stick to the substrate. Each pair of annual leaves dries out and opens to reveal one or more new pairs of leaves inside.
• Growth: Extremely slow, which makes it a valuable and challenging collection plant.
• Flowering: It produces small daytime flowers, usually in shades of yellow, white or pink, which emerge from the cleft between the lobes, adding a touch of delicacy to its rocky appearance. Flowering typically occurs in the fall.

Specific care:

• Light: It needs direct and intense sunlight, but with good ventilation, especially during its growing season (fall/winter). In summer, during dormancy, the plant should be protected from the strongest direct sunlight.
• Watering: The most critical aspect of your cultivation. Water carefully only during the period of active growth (fall/winter). In summer (dormancy), watering must be controlled to avoid rotting. The best approach is to water when the bodies begin to “wilt” slightly.
• Substrate: Crucial for success. It requires an extremely well-drained, mineral substrate with little organic matter. An ideal mix includes pumice, coarse sand, perlite and potting soil.
• Temperature: Tolerates temperature fluctuations, but protects from strong frosts and excessive heat and humidity in summer. Summer dormancy is essential for its survival.
• Ventilation: Essential to avoid moisture build-up and fungal diseases.
