Adromischus: small succulents with striking leaves

Adromischus stand out for their fleshy leaves in unusual shapes: rounded, elongated or with wavy edges, depending on the species. Some have contrasting spots; others catch the eye with their texture and shades of green, grey or red.

Native to South Africa and Namibia, these succulents generally stay small and are well suited to growing in pots. The range of leaf shapes makes it possible to build a varied collection even in a small space, with plants that reward a closer look.

General Adromischus care

  • Light: keep them in a very bright spot. Gentle morning sun can work well; introduce them gradually to direct sunlight and protect them from intense sun during the hottest hours.
  • Watering: let the compost dry between waterings and avoid leaving water standing in the pot. Adjust the frequency to the plant's growth and growing conditions, reducing it when the plant is less active.
  • Compost and pot: use a free-draining mix with mineral components such as pumice or perlite, and a pot with drainage holes.
  • Cold and moisture: protect them from frost and prolonged rain. A sheltered, airy spot helps prevent the compost from staying wet for too long.
  • Handling and propagation: leaves detach easily on many species, so handle the plants with care. Some can be propagated from healthy leaves; let the separation point dry before placing them on suitable compost.
