Coryphantha elephantidens: The Sculptural Cactus

Coryphantha elephantidens is an impressive cactus prized by collectors for its robust shape and spectacular flowers. Originally from the semi-desert landscapes of Mexico, this solitary cactus or one that forms small clusters, stands out for its large, prominent tubers, which resemble the skin of an elephant, hence its affectionate name.

Features:

Body: Globose, usually solitary when young, but can form small groups with age. The color varies from greyish-green to bluish-green. Its surface is covered in large, rounded, prominent tubercles with distinct grooves, which give it a unique rough texture.
Thorns: Usually short, thick and curved, they emerge from the upper part of the tubers. The number and size of the spines can vary, but they are generally less dense than on other cacti, allowing the beauty of the body to be appreciated.
Growth: Slow to moderate, can reach considerable sizes over time (up to 15-20 cm in diameter or more).
Flowering: The highlight of this species! It produces large, spectacular flowers, up to 7-8 cm in diameter, which emerge from the apex of the plant. The flowers are funnel-shaped, with silky petals in vibrant shades of deep pink, magenta or purple-red, sometimes with a lighter center. Flowering typically occurs in late summer or early fall.

Care:

Light: It needs direct, intense sunlight for most of the day to promote compact growth and abundant flowering. In very hot climates, a little protection at peak sun hours can be beneficial.
Watering: Water moderately during the growing season (spring and summer), allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. It is crucial to avoid overwatering, which is the main cause of rot in cacti.
Substrate: Essentially mineral and with excellent drainage. An ideal mix includes coarse sand, perlite, pumice and/or akadama, with a small percentage of organic matter.
Ventilation: Good air circulation is important to prevent moisture build-up and fungal diseases.
